Oil Pulling. Yup. First time I read it I was thinking the same thing. What the heck is oil pulling? That sounds like something you might do to a car or a way of cleaning out rusty pipes.

But no, this is actually something you can do with your mouth. It’s an old Ayurvedic remedy and proclaims a long list of remedies. The obvious is that it would heal the mouth, but it claims to heal all kinds of conditions including digestion issues.

Originally discovered by Dr. F. Karach, M.D. who had a blood disease, he then coined the term after healing himself. I was introduced to this healing treatment by Jill from Real Food Forager. She is always a wealth of information on interesting topics such as these. I don’t want to repeat everything she has said so well already, so you can read her article here.

If you want to geek out more on the topic, this is a good place to start. has some interesting info too and a free ebook. What’s interesting is some of its claims to fame. According to, it heals “head-aches, bronchitis, tooth pain, thrombosis, eczema, ulcers and diseases of stomach, intestines, heart, blood, kidney, liver, lungs and women’s diseases. It heals diseases of nerves, paralysis, and encephalitis. It prevents the growth of malignant tumors, cuts and heals them. Chronic sleeplessness is cured.”

The reasons I have for using oil pulling are a little bit different.

Can you believe that you can get rid of bad breath and morning breath (aka “zacklies”) just by swishing a little organic coconut oil? Try it out for yourself and let me know what you think in the comments. I love using Nutiva Coconut Oil and Maison Orphee, but you can use any coconut oil you like.
